Benjamin Sulte (1841-1923) a été un historien notoire du Canada français. Pendant soixante ans, ce fonctionnaire et érudit autodidacte a écrit plusieurs milliers d'articles et une trentaine d'ouvrages, tout en participant aux délibérations des principales sociétés savantes de son époque, notamment la Société royale du Canada. Mais il s'est aussi investi dans la commémoration sociopolitique, soit comme initiateur de comités pour l'érection de monuments, soit comme membre fondateur de la Société des sites historiques et de la Commission des lieux et monuments historiques du Canada. Sulte a donc été partie prenante à la fois de l'institutionnalisation des sciences historiques et de l'utilisation commemorative de l'histoire. Le témoignage de Sulte montre comment se sont enchevêtrées à leur origine ces deux pratiques aujourd'hui reconnues comme distinctes.

Benjamin Sulte (1841-1923) was a noted historian of French Canada. For sixty years, this civil servant and self-taught scholar wrote several thousand articles and some thirty books while participating in the discussions of the principal learned societies of his day, notably the Royal Society of Canada. But he was also involved in socio-political commemoration, as the initiator of committees to erect monuments and as a founding member of the Historic Landmarks Association and the Commission of Historic Sites and Monuments of Canada. Sulte thus participated in both the institutionalisation of the historical sciences and the use of history as commemoration. Sulte's career demonstrates how two practices that today are seen as distinct were, at their origins, interwoven.
