La création, en 1996, de Matines. Sade au petit déjeuner par le Nouveau Théâtre Expérimental répondait à plusieurs impératifs chers à la compagnie, qui aime explorer l’insolite et le provoquer. Ainsi, non seulement la production était-elle l’occasion de remettre en question le rapport acteurs/spectateurs en raison des lieux et heures de représentation, mais elle se voulait surtout l’affirmation d’un nouveau regard porté sur la vie et l’oeuvre de Sade par l’art théâtral. Prise de position en partie contre le théâtre qui évacue de Sade toute dimension politique, Matines s’inscrivait aussi dans la lignée des oeuvres du NTE remettant en question toute propagande révolutionnaire.

In 1996, the Nouveau Théâtre Expérimental produced Matines. Sade au petit déjeuner, a play in which it is possible to observe many of the topics dear to this company that seeks to explore the unusual and the provocative. Thus, the production gave the creators the opportunity to attempt to redefine the relationship between actors and spectators by adopting an inhabitual time and space of performance. Above all, however, this play is the affirmation of a new vision of the life and work of the Marquis de Sade through theatre. In part a stand against the kind of theatre that evacuates the political dimension of Sade's writings, Matines is, for the NTE, part of a larger group of plays that examines revolutionary propaganda.
