Depuis la publication du poème Évangeline. A Tale of Acadie par Henry W. Longfellow en 1847, s’est développé un mythe fondateur américain qui est devenu, au fil du temps, un mythe constitutif de l’identité culturelle en Acadie et en Louisiane. Cet article propose une analyse des reprises médiatiques du mythe d’Évangéline et de la réinterprétation de ce personnage dans divers médias (drame musical, cinéma, roman ou chanson) depuis la publication du poème de Longfellow il y a cent cinquante ans. Cette exploitation très variée de la figure d’Évangéline révèle d’un côté un succès économique important, mais de l’autre, la déconstruction du mythe originel par les Acadiens. La trajectoire médiatique et dialogique d’Évangéline permet de suivre le développement de ce mythe oscillant, selon le contexte, entre américanité et américanisation.

Since the publication of the poem Evangeline: A Tale of Acadie by Henry W. Longfellow in 1847, an American founding myth has developed which has become, over time, a myth essential to the cultural identity of Acadia and Louisiana. This article presents an analysis of treatments of the Evangeline myth and the reinterpretation of this character in various media (musical theatre, film, novel and song) since the publication of Longfellow's poem 150 years ago. This diverse exploitation of the myth reveals an important economic success on one hand, and its deconstruction by the Acadians on the other. The trajectory of Evangeline through media and dialogue makes it possible to follow the development of this myth that fluctuates, according to the context, between américanité and americanisation.
