Mirroring changes in the surrounding social environment, the organization of the workplace within Quebec public daycare centres (CPE – Centres de la petite enfance) has become increasingly complex over the last few years. The subsequent changes require all involved persons to cooperate, establish clear rules of conduct and develop agreements acceptable to all those working within the CPE system. Interpersonal trust allows for the establishment of a psychologically acceptable milieu. Furthermore, the co-operation of all participants fulfills the needs of children within the daycares through improved educative practices that in turn benefits parents and society at large. Using written accounts from workers within the Quebec CPE daycare system, this paper highlights ways that trust is established and maintained within this setting. Analysis of the data using an interpersonal trust model confirms the relevance of categories for this model.
