Dans cet article, Dominique Poulot présente un survol historique de la notion de patrimoine culturel immatériel et de sa relation avec les études en muséologie en France. Il ramène cette étude au temps présent pour examiner l’impact actuel du patrimoine culturel immatériel sur les musées. Depuis 2006, lorsque la France a signé la Convention pour la sauvegarde du patrimoine culturel immatériel de l’UNESCO, le patrimoine culturel immatériel est devenu un sujet actuel de préoccupation. Dans le monde muséal, on a recours à divers intermédiaires institutionnels pour informer les conservateurs sur le patrimoine immatériel, par le biais d’ICOM France par exemple. Dans le même temps, la Mission du patrimoine ethnologique (MPE) a lancé une réflexion collective au sujet des nouvelles catégories et du nouveau cadre d’activités relevant du patrimoine culturel immatériel que l’on ne considère de nature « ethnologique » que depuis peu. Par conséquent, le patrimoine immatériel devrait être au programme de différents corps administratifs officiels suivant le processus vertical qui caractérise la tradition centralisée des organisations patrimoniales et des musées français. La situation est apparemment devenue plus propice de ce point de vue depuis qu’un certain nombre d’évènements récents ont mis en lumière le fait que l’opposition entre l’espace social constamment changeant des anthropologues et l’enfermement des objets conservés dans les musées cher aux spécialistes de la culture matérielle est à présent chose du passé.
