En 2007, l’illustratrice Pénélope Bagieu lançait sur la toile un blog BD, qu’elle dédiait à la réalité prosaïque de son quotidien. Trois ans plus tard, cette diplômée de l’École nationale supérieure des Arts décoratifs de Paris et du Central St Martins College of Art and Design publiait aux éditions Gallimard son premier roman graphique, Cadavres exquis. Comment ce passage d’une production « sauvage » à l’une des plus prestigieuses maisons d’édition s’est-il effectué? C’est à cette question que l’article tente de répondre. Pour ce faire, il s’articule en quatre parties. En préambule, une brève présentation des notions de blog et blogosphère et de leur aspect intrinsèquement fuyant et sauvage permettra d’appréhender le cas particulier de Pénélope Bagieu – et de son blog Ma vie est tout à fait fascinante. Ce dernier est ensuite observé en tant que lieu d’affirmation de soi de son auteure, notamment avec un choix d’implication confondue dans un genre particulier, à savoir la chick lit. Connaissant un succès particulier, le blog va être reformaté en objet-livre et plusieurs publications vont suivre la première (en passant par la maison d’édition Gawsewitch pour arriver jusqu’au catalogue Gallimard). Cette reconfiguration provoque inévitablement un changement sur la plateforme en ligne mais également dans la posture de l’auteure, qui tente tant bien que mal de se détacher du côté girly qu’on lui accorde. Néanmoins, Pénélope Bagieu connaît plusieurs ratés en format papier lorsque ses publications ne sont pas assimilées à une production en ligne. Son actualité témoigne d’ailleurs de la nécessité de lier les deux médias : elle publie actuellement, chaque lundi, une planche sur un blog hébergé par Le Monde qui fera l’objet d’une publication chez Gallimard à l’avenir. Est-il donc, aujourd’hui, réellement possible pour une artiste assimilée à la toile de s’émanciper et devenir une auteure BD reconnue?

In 2007, illustrator Penelope Bagieu created a comic weblog dedicated to the prosaic reality of her daily routine. Three years later, Bagieu, a graduate of the National School of Decorative Arts (Paris) and of the Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design (London), published her first graphic novel, Cadavre exquis, with Gallimard publishers. This article takes a four-pronged approach in its attempt to answer the question of how the transfer of a “wild” production to one of the most prestigious publishing houses took place. In the preamble, a brief presentation of the concepts associated with blogs and blogospheres and of their intrinsically elusive and wild nature culminates with an appreciation of the particular case of Pénélope Bagieu―and of her blog Ma vie est tout à fait fascinante. The blog is then examined as a place of self-affirmation for the author, including a confounding move to mix with a particular genre, namely chick lit. In light of its notable success, the blog was then reformatted into a book-object with several subsequent publications (from the Gawsewitch publishing house right up to the Gallimard catalogue). The reconfiguration inevitably provoked a change in the online platform but also in the attitude of the author who has tried her best to renounce the “girly” side attributed to her. Nonetheless, Bagieu suffered several missteps in the paper format when those versions were incompatible with online production. Her experience is, moreover, evidence of the need to link the two media: the pages she currently publishes every Monday on a blog hosted by Le Monde are destined to become the subject of a publication by Gallimard. Is it now, therefore, truly possible for artists accustomed to the Internet to liberate themselves and become renowned writers of comic books?
