Alfred Schütz, « Making Music Together. A Study of Social Relationships », Sociétés, ID : 10670/1.000628...
Alfred Schütz leads a phenomenology of musical experience in order to study the basis of social relations. His case study of musical communication suggests that communicating presupposes a “mutual tuning-up,” in this case, one defined by the sharing of a time span, of a “current of consciousness,” as when two listeners settle into the same musical tempo. The social relationship precedes, and moreover constitutes the condition for any possible social relationship that can be created with the language and the presence of individuals in a common space.
