Cyanobacteria in human affaires

Résumé 0

"Few people know what are the so-called Cyanobacteria orBlue-Green Algae, although these organisms are responsibleboth for benefits and nuisances in human affairs. They are halfwaybetween Bacteria and Algae, because their cellular organizationis prokaryotic, but their photosynthesis physiology isvery similar to that of the Algae. Among the benefits humans getfrom them, is their utilization as biofertilizers in rice fields, thanks to their capacity of fixing atmospheric nitrogen and producingnitrogen-rich organic compounds that contribute to increasethe rice yield. On the other side, these organisms alsogrow very well in lakes and ponds used as water reservoirs forhuman consumption, where they frequently produce waterblooms with release of neuro- and hepato-toxins."
