Résumé 0

This study focuses on the prominent role of the princes’ instructors toprepare the imperial heirs for carrying out their future political duties, and especially to teach them the expected behaviour, i.e. the personathey should play. I analyse firstly the place and identity of thoseteachers according to the ancient texts, which are often incompleteregarding this subject. Then, I examine the choice, and the reasons forselecting a teacher : a lot of duties could be bestowed upon them, asthey served the domus augusta. It is furthermore worth consideringmore precisely the Antonine Period, in which the image of the goodemperor had been firmly established : it is possible to demonstrate thata clear political model was conveyed and supported by the continuity ofboth the men and discourse in the Greek rhetoric from MarcusAurelius to Caracalla.
