Paul-Émile de La Fruglaye (1766-1849) is a seemingly common and unremarkable person who remained in the shadow of the great captains, martyrs of the counter-revolution. Although he is not exactly the kind of anonymous person who would have interested Alain Corbin and the proponents of micro-history, the story of La Fruglaye allows a rereading of the Norman Chouannerie from the point of view of a simple royalist, whose name has barely entered posterity. While he might not have attracted the attention of scholars and historians, his role as a royal agent seemed indispensable to the main participants of this battle, notably Louis de Frotté. He also is a good example of the complicated relationship between the British government and the French emigrants. From the point of view of military history finally, La Fruglaye is an ancestor of the officers employed as international staff officers. In his time, he already experienced the complexities of multiple subordinations.

Paul-Émile de La Fruglaye (1766-1849) est un homme a priori banal et sans relief, resté dans l’ombre des grands capitaines martyrs de la Contre-Révolution. Bien qu’il ne soit pas exactement le genre d’anonyme qui aurait intéressé Alain Corbin et les tenants de la micro-histoire, l’histoire de La Fruglaye permet une relecture de la chouannerie normande du point de vue d’un simple royaliste dont la postérité a tout juste retenu le nom. En effet, bien qu’il n’ait pas attiré l’attention des érudits et des historiens, son rôle d’agent de renseignement et de liaison a paru indispensable aux protagonistes de ce combat, notamment Louis de Frotté. Par ailleurs, il constitue une bonne illustration de la relation compliquée entre le gouvernement britannique et les émigrés français. Du point de vue de l’histoire militaire enfin, La Fruglaye est un des ancêtres des officiers insérés dans les états-majors internationaux. À son époque, il expérimente déjà la complexité des subordinations multiples.
