Iñigo Urrestarazu-Porta et al., « Phonological nasality in Larraine Basque: there is /h̃/, but no nasal vowels », HAL SHS (Sciences de l’Homme et de la Société), ID : 10.35462/flv137.7
Basque. Yet, it has not been studied phonetically. The only «nasalized vowels» found in Larraine are the ones surrounding the aspirate that comes from an intervocalic *n (Lafon 1957). We use a nasalance device to check Lafon’s claims. In our data, /V/ and /Ṽ/ show similar values. Thus, /Ṽ/ is no longer nasalized. Yet, as Lafon suggested, the vowels in the /h̃V/ and /Vh̃/ sequences have greater nasalance values. However, we fail to distinguish /V/, /Ṽ/, /h̃V/ and /Vh̃/ for multiple speakers, which suggests /h̃/ may be disappearing too. We want to highlight the need to study such phenomena before they are totally lost.
