Allaitements “transgressifs” dans l’Antiquité gréco-romaine

In this paper, I analyze all forms of breastfeeding, which break the norms in the Greek and Roman worlds. By “ norm,” I mean a situation where a woman breastfeeds a baby. I will consider as the “ norm” the fact that the biological mother is not necessarily the one who breastfeeds the baby. However, given the ambiguous way in which the nurse is often described by ancient authors, I will treat her case separately. I will take into consideration the following forms of transgressive breastfeeding in the ancient world : 1) human ↔ not be human in both directions (including the plant kingdom) ; 2) man → child ; 3) woman → adult or old man/ woman (especially daughter-father).

Dans cette contribution, j’analyse toutes les formes d’allaitement qui transgressent la norme dans l’Antiquité gréco-romaine, où la norme serait celle où une femme allaite un enfant. J’ai considéré comme « norme » le fait que la mère biologique ne soit pas nécessairement celle qui allaite le nourrisson. Mais, compte tenu de la manière ambiguë utilisée pour décrire la nourrice dans les sources antiques, je vais m’ arrêter aussi sur cette figure, qui, en plus, est liée à l’allaitement animal. Les formes d’ allaitement transgressives dans le monde antique sont : 1) être humain ↔ être non humain dans les deux directions (y compris le monde végétal) ; 2) homme → enfant ; 3) femme → adulte ou vieillard/ e (surtout fille-père).
