The author of this paper deals with the question of the ways of reception of the novel according to French cultural history. Like no other art form, the novel confronts its readers with circumstances arising from their own environment of social and historical norms and stimulates them to assess and criticize their surroundings. As for the reception of this literary genre, French scholars, such as Daniel Roche, Anne-Marie Thiesse, Roger Chartier and others, inspired by history, anthropology, sociology of culture and the Constance School of reception aesthetics, analyse on the one hand different types of reading which, in part, depend on different social and cultural backgrounds of readers and their expectations, on the other hand a cultural appropriation of the novel in different epochs. By quoting many works of French fiction, they focus on how a reader who exists in tension between the past, the present of the social, political and economics realities and his own experience, interacts with the text and participates in dialogue with its structures, imposed by writer and editor, by causing them to converge with his cultural horizon. Finally, French cultural historians emphasize the role of the reader who, like a “performer”, takes part in a creating process, allowing for theoretically inexhaustible realizations of the text.
