Knowing the sources of the imperfections of geographic information plays a significant part in characterizing its internal quality but also in handling its external quality in the areas of application in which it plays a central role. These applications may meet everyday needs, such as calculating itineraries, or complex issues, such as land management or the assessment of scenarios. This chapter suggests a way to categorize the various sources of imperfection in geographic information that maintains the classic distinction between different phases or processes (from the collection of data to its use). It shows through which components (initial source, target model, measuring tool, procedure, and operator) imperfections may find their way into the five classic processes that characterize the life cycle of geographic data. The chapter demonstrates that these imperfections concern various dimensions (semantic, geometric, and temporal) and different types (vector, raster) of geographic data.
