Pierre-Daniel Huet’s library, for the most part kept today in the Bibliothèque nationale de France, is one of the best-known and richest French collections from the seventeenth century. At the death of the prelate, it included 8,271 works, acquired during the seven decades of Huet’s scientific career (1650–1721), that is to say about 118 new books a year (one every three days...), for an average outlay of 708 livres a year (6.57 per cent of his expenses). An examination of the account book kept daily by Huet between 1650 and 1692 (BNF, Manuscrits, NAF 1197) shows that he had steady relations with many booksellers (about thirty of them), publishers, printers, binders, gilders, engravers, copyists, illuminators. One is thus in the midst of the small world of the book craftsmen which one sees operating under our eyes.
