Depingimus demonstrando: Western and Syriac Quest for Number and Measure in the Liber Nemroth’s Texts and Diagrams

Highlighting evidence for the dual cultural affiliation of the texts and diagrams of the Liber Nemroth to both Middle Eastern cosmological doctrines and the scientific context of the Carolingian period. Method: investigation of the cosmological doctrines and calculation methods of the LN for traces of 'Chaldean' roots, and comparison with the Carolingian collections of Computus. Seven new manuscripts of the LN have been discovered (3 complete manuscripts were previously known). The article establishes that the writing of the text must be before 820.

Mise en évidence des preuves de la double appartenance culturelle des textes et des diagrammes du Liber Nemroth à la fois aux doctrines cosmologiques moyen-orientales et au contexte scientifique de l’époque carolingienne. Méthode : recherche, dans les doctrines cosmologiques et les méthodes de calcul du LN, de traces de racines ‘chaldéennes’, et comparaison avec les collections d’argumenta de comput carolingiennes. Sept nouveaux manuscrits du LN ont été découverts (3 manuscrits complets étaient connus auparavant). L’article établit que la rédaction du texte doit se situer avant 820.
