On Race, Riots, and Infrapolitics in Wartime Los AngelesThis article considers what infrapolitics reveals about the zoot-suit riots of June 1943 in Los Angeles and vice versa. It starts from the premise that the riots were an unofficial register of the political views of those involved and made up of countless small acts performed by ordinary folk. The argument is twofold. First, I suggest that a focus on infrapolitics shows that citizenship in wartime LA was unequal based on competing race, gender, and class identities. Second, I assert that the zoot-suit riots were an historical case in which infrapolitics was practiced by subordinate and dominant racial groups, determined by the spatial and temporal parameters of the city, and linked to a longer term war of position for racial equality in LA
