Research on the potential for mitigating agricultural GHG emissions, carried out by a group of INRA scientific experts from different disciplines (economics, animal physiology, agronomy, etc.) has contributed to generating impacts on society of the following types:•Policy impacts (design of mitigation scenarios, design of agri-environmental measures and regional emissions reduction programs, integration of the agricultural sector in emissions inventory...)•Environmental impacts (implementation on farms of certain agricultural practices identified as reducing GHG emissions)•Economic impacts (mainly related to the implementation of GHG mitigation measures by farmers)This success was possible in the context of the general awareness of climate change and its effects, and its translation into various national and international treaties (Kyoto Protocol, United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, Grenelle de l'environnement...).The research was carried out at the instigation of ADEME and the French Ministries in charge of Agriculture and Ecology, and with the assistance of partner field experts: ADEME, technical Institutes, APCA, InVivo, etc. It mobilized technical and statistical data, i.e. complementary resources provided by these partners and sponsors. As a result, 10 technical measures and 26 sub-measure were identified –whose implementation allows to reduce on-farm GHG emissions – and their GHG mitigation potential, implementation cost, and area base (maximum area on which they can be implemented) were quantified. The measures identified, their quantification, and the underlying methodology were disseminated outside the academic sphere via the ADEME documentation, the I4CE “Club Climat Agriculture”, and the Climagri network, which has enabled the appropriation of the research results by cooperatives, chambers of agriculture (extension services), technical Institutes, and local authorities.
