Since the 1960s, the “gentrification” process has been studied in Europe and in North America. Two trends have emerged that represent one Canadian and one American model of the transformation of inner cities. These two contrasted academic discourses try to explain gentrification, through Professor Neil Smith’s American “revanchist city” model on the one hand, and the image developed by David Ley of a Canadian “emancipated city” on the other hand.
