Résumé En

This essay is a double reading of "Spéculer - sur Freud" by Jacques Derrida and Jane Austen's posthumous fiction, Sanditon, and her Pride and Prejudice. It argues, in sum, that mischief is the true chief, master, sovereign, in both Freud's "Beyond the Pleasure Principle" (studied by Derrida) and in Austen's fiction. Especially, the supposedly minor characters, such as Lydia Bennett and Wickham, are the heroes for Austen, as she subverts any notion of mastery by that of mis-chief, a Miss Chief also.
