Résumé 0

The metaphor of liquids has become dominant to describe migrations. It tends to de-humanize migrants, by treating them in terms of canalization, damns and filters — as in China, where they are mentioned as waves of floating illegalities. Images from the 2015 Syrian exodus stage shipwrecks, torrential rains, and quest for drinkable water in camps. In Calais or Grande Synthe, mud turns refugees into undifferentiated victims. In the language of the migrants themselves, can the liquid metaphor be reversed towards positive meanings?
