A vitreous coating on ceramic has several functions: a practical one, by waterproofing and protecting the earthenware object, but also an esthetic and symbolic one. The extent and the nature of the interface connecting the two materials - fired clay of the body and glassy material of the decoration - play an essential role in the final composition of the glaze and many physicochemical properties of the finished object. Relying on the pioneering and very detailed works of Molera et al. (2001), Walton (2004), Ben Amara (2002) and the recent works of Roisine (2018) and Godet et al. (2019), this chapter proposes a review of the state of knowledge for lead-rich glazes.

Un revêtement vitreux sur remplit plusieurs fonctions : une fonction pratique, en imperméabilisant et protégeant l'objet en terre cuite, mais aussi une fonction esthétique et symbolique. L'étendue et la nature de l'interface reliant les deux matériaux - l'argile cuite du corps et le matériau vitreux de la décoration - jouent un rôle essentiel dans la composition finale de la glaçure et de nombreuses propriétés physico-chimiques de l'objet fini. S'appuyant sur les travaux pionniers et très détaillés de Molera et al. (2001), Walton (2004), Ben Amara (2002) et les travaux récents de Roisine (2018) et Godet et al. (2019), ce chapitre propose une revue de l'état des connaissances sur les émaux riches en plomb.
