Organizing a colony’ s Territory. The Theoretical Demands of Gromatic texts. The territory of the colonies, propugnacula imperii according to Cicero’ s word, is based on patterns and uses on which we have a large amount of information in the works of the Roman land-surveyors. Gromatic literature delivers information on the way a colonial territory must be organized, following an orthonormal system of structuring lines. Between the owned lands, boundary markers follow a precise codification, mentioned especially in Hyginus Gromaticus. Between cities, they help marking the boundaries of the territories, registered by the agrimensores in formular texts which are clearly consistent with what we know through epigraphy. The role played by the ordo administrating the colony is also mentioned in some passages of the gromatic corpus.

Le territoire des colonies, propugnacula imperii selon une expression de Cicéron, est organisé selon des modèles et avec des pratiques à propos desquels on trouve une documentation importante chez les arpenteurs romains. La littérature gromatique livre les informations sur la manière dont il faut organiser un territoire colonial d’ après un système orthonormé d’axes structurants. Entre les possessions, les bornes sont des marqueurs obéissant à une codification précise, évoquée notamment par Hygin le Gromatique. Entre les cités, elles concourent à la limitation des territoires, enregistrée chez les agrimensores par des textes formulaires dont le rapport est net avec ce que nous connaissons par l’épigraphie. Le rôle de l’ordo dans l’ administration de la colonie est aussi évoqué par quelques passages du corpus gromatique.
