Résumé
This paper presents reflections on translation of Indian classical poetry on the basis of a recent experience of translating Hāla's Sattasaī, from Prakrit into French. It also examines earlier translation attempts both in English, German and Italian. The issues at stake are the format of translation, ways to render the rhythm and verse-format, the poetical images and the vocabulary which includes several 'regional' or non-standard language words.
