L’analyse comparative des œuvres de Rousseau et de Fénelon souligne l’influence des Dialogues des morts sur la prosopopée de Fabricius. Ayant formulé les principes du « droit politique » et étudié l’origine de l’inégalité, Rousseau rompt avec la tradition moraliste et sa critique de la « corruption » de la nature humaine. Sa méthode généalogique s’applique aussi aux témoignages des auteurs antiques. Dans les œuvres de la maturité, analysant les mœurs distinctives des peuples modernes, il prouve que la référence à l’Antiquité est souvent une manipulation utilisée notamment par l’oligarchie genevoise.

A comparative analysis of the works of Rousseau and Fenelon reveals the influence of the Dialogues of the dead on the prosopopœia of Fabricius in Rousseau’s first Discourse. After enunciating the “principles of political law” and studying the origin of inequality, Rousseau breaks with this tradition and the related criticism of the “corruption” of human nature, justifying the philosophical method of genealogical research, applicable to the study of the testimony of ancient writers. In his later writings, focusing on the specific mores of modern peoples, he argued that the reference to Antiquity is often a manipulation, as shown in the case of the Geneva oligarchy.
