L’A. donne, après l’autopsie, une nouvelle lecture d’une tablette de malédiction trouvée dans le puits d’une maison de la rue de l’Inopos à Délos. Le texte est adressé aux Dieux Syriens, décrits comme habitants d’un lieu inconnu par ailleurs, dit Sykôn. Leur épithète, kyrioi, montre que l’inscription ne peut datée bien avant le début de l’ère chrétienne ; elle doit être postérieure à la destruction par Mithridate du sanctuaire des Dieux Syriens (89 av. J.-C.), considérée comme terminus ante quem de l’inscription. L’écriture et la phonétique s’accordent bien avec cette datation plus tardive. Dans le commentaire sont donnés des parallèles tirés d’autres prières de vengeance.

A Prayer for Vengeance on a Lead Tablet from Delos The A. gives, after autopsy, a new reading of a curse tablet found in the well of a house on the rue de l’Inopos on Delos. The text is addressed to the Syrian Gods, who are described as living in a place, otherwise unknown, called Sykôn. Their epithet, kyrioi, shows that the inscription cannot date much before the beginning of our era ; more precisely, it must be before the destruction, by Mithridates, of the sanctuary of the Syrian Gods (89 B.C.), previously considered a terminus ante quem of the inscription. The letter forms and the phonetics of the informal spelling fit this later dating. Parallels from other prayers for vengeance are given in the commentary.
