The coexistence in the same etymological family of a radical vowel i and e (as similis, simul/arch. lat. semol, semel < *sem-) had been already studied in classical Latin. However the spelling of i for e is frequent, in various contexts, in some manuscripts written in Latin during the 10th century, in the North of France. Thus we will see that the Annals of Saint-Berthin are filled with toponyms, anthroponyms and substantives that show a variation between i and e for the radical vowel. Perhaps this spelling is the contemporary sign of a different phonetic realization, certainly very ancient and localized. Other documents too, such as the oboles, show the same phenomenon, which allows us to suggest another etymology for old French sire rather than the reconstructed form *seior, drawn from the comparative senior.
