Joseph Dalbera, « The Grammaticalisation of Itive and Ventive Forms in Latin », Syntaxe et sémantique, ID : 10670/1.104999...
Like other languages, Latin uses the verbs ire (to go) and uenire ( to come) beyond their value of motion, in occurrences that range from simple metaphor to actual auxiliation. Indeed, these verbal lexemes fall within the scope of three or even four cases of variably advanced grammaticalisation: ire / uenire + supine, the future passive infinitive ( amatum iri), ire / uenire among serial verbs, or even ire / uenire in metalinguistic occurrences. This study aims at providing an overview of the Latin expressions which involve these lexemes ( ire and uenire) in order to present their construction and way of operating, and also to measure their degree of grammaticalisation and to underline – if need be – the possible links that unite them or their surviving forms in Romance languages.
