Résumé 0

Looking back at the evolution of the “Yellow Vests” movement in the Lyon urban area, this article analyzes the role of space in the possibilities for engagement by individuals from working-class backgrounds. The follow-up of a small group of people mobilized from a traffic circle in Lyon’s industrial and working-class suburbs shows how the different “places of engagement”, and the resources and constraints associated with them, are subject to differentiated appropriations. While the traffic circle investigated is a space conducive to the mobilization of the racialized working classes, the movement’s evolution towards inner-city locations is leading to their sidelining in favor of activists better endowed with militant and educational capital. This process of relegation of suburban “Yellow Vests” posed real difficulties for their continued involvement in the movement. It led to the reappropriation of the movement in favor of repertoires of action and causes more closely linked to the experience lived in working-class neighborhoods. The article finally demonstrates how these individuals detached themselves from the “Yellow Vests” movement to become entrepreneurs of collective action in working-class suburbs.
