Claudio Monteverdi famously ends his Il Combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda with the last words of the dying Clorinda: ‘S’apre il cielo, vado in pace’ [The heavens open, I go in peace]. Slain by the Crusader who has loved her since he first saw her at a fountain, Clorinda has just been baptized with water from another fountain.
