In vorliegender Arbeit wird einleitend die Genese der mittelalterlichen Stadtbefestigung Alexandrias beschrieben, in welche Sultan Qaitbay im 15. Jh. ein Hafenfort einfügte. Der Baugeschichtsteil erläutert die diversen Bauphasen des Forts bis in die heutige Zeit. Im Architekturteil werden die einzelnen Fortbereiche wie Bering, Hauptturm, Betsaal und Zisternen beschrieben und in Bezug zu vergleichbaren Bauten gesetzt. Ein umfassender Abbildungsteil sowie ein Katalog der Vergleichsbauten werden durch den Anhang mit Schriftquellen komplettiert.

The present dissertation describes the genesis of the medieval fortifications of Alexandria which Sultan Qaitbay completed in the 15th century by founding a fort on the site of the collapsed lighthouse. A history of the various modifications which the fort underwent throughout the centuries is followed by a comprehensive architectural study of all of its parts. The figures provide an extensive collection of architectural drawings, recent and historical photos and illustrations of the fort as well as a catalog of corresponding monuments. The annex contains the written sources like travelers accounts and military reports.

Ce mémoire traite la genèse des fortifications médiévales de la ville d'Alexandrie et l'implantation du fort Qaitbay à la fin du XVe siècle sur le site du Phare effondré. Une chronologie des phases de construction du fort est suivie par une description architecturale exhaustive de toutes ses parties. Dans les annexes sont regroupés les relevés, photos et illustrations historiques du fort, un catalogue comparatif des monuments et fortifications mamelouks ainsi que les sources littéraires tels que récits de voyageurs et rapports militaires.
