Charles Vial, « Géricault et les écuries impériales », Revue de l'art, ID : 10670/1.13cf96...
The portraits of horses painted by Géricault at the beginning of his career are well known, but the identity of their models and the circumstances of their realization still remain to be studied. For most of these artworks, the sources indicate that the painter frequented the imperial stables in Versailles, without further precision. The architectural elements, the harnesses, the physical appearance of the animals and the riders’ costumes nevertheless allow the reconstitution of Géricault’s peregrinations between the different stables belonging to the Tuileries Court or to the Garde Impériale, where he could spend time with other painters at the same epoch.
