Fine metalworking tools and workshops in Western and Northern Europe. A diachronic consideration

This paper deals with late prehistoric fine metalworking tools and workshops in Western and Northern Europe. From the beginning of metallurgy in the third Millennium BC up to the end of the Iron Age in the first centuries BC, tools and manufacturing techniques for gold and silver develop with ongoing technological improvement. An interdisciplinary approach to fine metalworking tools combining archaeology, ethnoarchaeology, experimental archaeology, iconography, and ancient written sources with archaeometry is demonstrated. Case studies illustrate specialised tools and their handling as well as the raw materials they are made of.

Cet article traite des outils et des ateliers de métallurgie fine de la fin de la préhistoire en Europe occidentale et septentrionale. Depuis les débuts de la métallurgie au troisième millénaire avant J.-C. jusqu'à la fin de l'âge du fer aux premiers siècles avant J.-C., les outils et les techniques de fabrication de l'or et de l'argent se développent avec des améliorations technologiques constantes. Une approche interdisciplinaire des outils de métallurgie fine combinant l'archéologie, l'ethnoarchéologie, l'archéologie expérimentale, l'iconographie et les sources écrites anciennes avec l'archéométrie est démontrée. Des études de cas illustrent des outils spécialisés et leur manipulation, ainsi que les matières premières qui les composent.
