La commémoration des sportifs tués lors de la Première Guerre mondiale débuta bien avant la fin de celle-ci, s’intensifia dès la sortie de guerre pour perdurer jusqu’au Centenaire qui fut un intense « moment-mémoire » dans lequel de nombreux acteurs (État ; collectivités locales ; institutions publiques et privées ; particuliers ; associations) se sont investis. Nombreux furent les clubs sportifs à ériger des monuments aux morts en l’honneur de leurs membres mais peu multiplièrent les projets mémoriels comme le club de football écossais d’ Heart of Midlothian. L’équipe d’Édimbourg sera donc au cœur de notre analyse afin de sonder cette mémoire à travers les modalités et surtout la fonction de la construction du souvenir de ses morts.

The commemoration of the athletes killed in the First World War began well before the end of the First World War and intensified from the end of the war until the Centenary, which was an intense “memory moment” in which many actors (State; local authorities; public and private institutions; individuals; associations) have been involved.
