This editorial presents the main questions that drive this themedissue on the links that exist between martial arts practices andreligion. How can terminological, categorical and definitionalboundaries be delineated to frame the two notions? What arethe contemporary dynamics that redefine their relationships,from the processes of formalisation and specialisation, to thephenomena of patrimonialization, crossbreeding, hybridisationand (re)invention? How might martial arts become a practiceof peace? The various contributions in this collection provideseveral elements of an answer to this question, by offeringinsights into the violent and conflictual propensities of martialpractices but also into their ethical, ritual, performative,therapeutic and regulatory dimensions.
