The Pantanal biome is a heterogeneous and dynamic ecosystem located in the center of South America and has complex relationships with climatic and geomorphic factors. Here, we investigate the spatio-temporal variability in the dynamics of the forest and savanna formations in the Pantanal do Abobral, one of the Pantanal subregions. The evolution of the forest and savanna formations between 2015 and 2022 was analyzed using maps from the Brazilian Annual Land Use and Land Cover Mapping Project (MapBiomas). We used time series of the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) from the Harmonized Landsat Sentinel-2 (HLS) product and precipitation from the Climate Hazards Group InfraRed Precipitation with Stations (CHIRPS) for the period 2015-2023 to identify spatial patterns in the relationships between the phenology of these formations and precipitation. The relationships were assessed using Pearson's correlation. In addition, spatial variations infunctional indices derived from NDVI time series were mapped. The savanna formation has shown a slight increase in recent years, to the detriment of the forest formation. However, omission and commission errors also contributed to this result. Generally, tree vegetation responds to rainfall with a delay of one to two months. Even within the same land cover class, different typologies respond differently to local precipitation regimes. Finally, this study highlights the importance of mapping that describes the functional attributes of vegetation and can therefore contribute to monitoring and planning mitigation and adaptation strategies to the effects of climate change.
