Résumé
How can we write the history of the environment when we speak of a period, the 1900s, when the environment itself did not exist as a category? It is an arduous task for current day historians, who are bound by their own world and conditions. The inquiry will therefore happen backwards: it begins with the term as it came to be used in the 1960s and 1970s to underline how different it was seventy years prior, and this, in three different linguistic spheres – the French, English and German ones. Our approach is lexical and concrete – the goal here is to find the words that prevailed at the time and thus try to comprehend what types and modes of political action existed as well as what they sought to protect.
