Quelques réflexions sur trois traductions françaises de « La casada infiel » de Federico García Lorca (Romancero gitano, n° 6)

Federico García Lorca’s Romancero gitano, published in 1928, aroused enthusiasm in the Spanish-speaking world, among his friends, critics, and broad sections of the public. This poetry collection permanently consolidated the poet’s fame. It is Lorca’s most published collection of poems in his lifetime, and the best known in Hispanic countries to this day. Soon afterward, it gave rise to different translations. We believed it would interesting to carry out an in-depth study of the translations of Romancero gitano, even if only of the French versions. After drawing up a (non-exhaustive) chronological review of the latter, and after briefly commenting on the sixth poem of the book entitled “La Casada Infiel” ( “The Unfaithful Wife”), we will carry out a comparative analysis of three translations of this poem by Jean Prévost (1935), Line Amselem (2003), and Michel Host (2012). This study aims to show that beyond more or less convincing translation choices, each of them, published in specific contexts, sheds light on different aspects of Lorca’s rich poem.

Le Romancero gitano de Federico García Lorca, paru en 1928, suscita l’enthousiasme général dans le monde hispanophone, à la fois chez ses amis poètes, parmi les critiques, et au sein de très larges couches de la population. Ce recueil assit définitivement la réputation du poète. Il s’agit du livre de Lorca le plus édité de son vivant, et à ce jour, c’est aussi le recueil poétique le plus connu dans tout le monde hispanique. Assez vite, il a également donné lieu à des traductions. Il y aurait une thèse à faire sur les traductions du Romancero gitano, ne serait-ce que sur ses traductions françaises... Après avoir dressé un bilan chronologique non exhaustif de ces dernières, et après avoir proposé un bref commentaire du sixième poème du recueil intitulé « La casada infiel », nous nous attacherons à une analyse comparative de trois traductions de ce même poème par Jean Prévost (1935), Line Amselem (2003) et Michel Host (2012), publiées dans des contextes fort différents. Cette étude cherche à démontrer que, par-delà des choix traductifs plus ou moins convaincants, chacune de ces versions met en lumière des aspects intéressants du très riche poème de Lorca.
