The present article concerns the ‘character’ of the diaconate. The A. first describes the evolution of the notion of character in the Tradition and in the works of Thomas Aquinas. He then indicates its relevance to the sacrament, showing that the ministry of the deacon always relates to a service of the community as well as to a configuration to Christ the Servant. It is in the dynamics of this diakonia of Christ that the ministry of the deacon takes its meaning and is able to incarnate itself, in an original manner, in a history of revelation and of salvation.

Cet article s’interroge sur le « caractère » du diaconat. Après avoir décrit l’évolution du caractère dans la Tradition et chez saint Thomas, l’A. fait ressortir que « le sacrement est caractère », et que le ministère propre du diacre se situe toujours dans la perspective d’un service de la communauté, en même temps que d’une configuration au Christ-serviteur. C’est dans la dynamique de cette diaconie du Christ que le ministère diaconal prend son sens, et peut aussi s’incarner de manière originale dans une histoire de révélation et de salut.
