As early as October 1949, Adorno returned from American exile, to the Universityof his home-town, Frankfurt. His decision to do so was by no means an easy one, especially seen beside the case of his first mentor in philosophy, Siegfried Kracauer.Among the various reasons that led to Adorno’s decision, the personal and politicalones are explored first of all. In this context, it will often be necessary to take intoaccount the conditions which sent Adorno into exile. Of even greater importanceis Adorno’s special relationship to the German language and the cultural valuesconveyed with it. In a concentrated manner, many of the reasons dealt with reoccurin the long letter Adorno wrote to Thomas Mann shortly after his return. The articleculminates in an analysis of this letter, a document of singular importance.
