Résumé 0

‪When considering the history of the school, it is better to include extra-curricular aspects, particularly at primary level, since this sheds light on certain parts of the history and also helps to define the boundaries of the educational institution. In the same way, 20th-century popular education needs to include the school-based part of its history. The article gives an overview of the variety of extracurricular activities – a problematic name – at different times and different educational levels. It presents the historiographical context that has long focused on the popular education movements not linked to schools, and suggests new avenues of research, some of which are explored in the article. The world of extracurricular activities constitutes an intermediate domain that has never been fully institutionalised, and that has provided scope for different ways of involvement depending on the era. This world has also been used at different times to encourage a renewal of educational practices. Less emphasis has been placed on the influence that schools have had on popular education practices.‪
