Moving an outsize Paper Cartoon out of storage: Preliminary observations on The Healing of the Lame Man after Raphael (National Gallery of Ireland)

Cet exposé porte sur le traitement d’un grand carton sur papier pour une tapisserie d’après Raphaël. Mesurant 376 sur 541 cm, le carton a été découpé en 8 bandes verticales en vue de sa transposition, bandes qui, au XIXe siècle, ont été rejointes et montées sur une toile fixée à un grand cadre en bois. En raison de sa présence en stock, cette œuvre est restée largement inaccessible aux chercheurs et a donc très peu été étudiée. Des travaux de construction au National Gallery d’Irlande ont fourni l’occasion de déplacer l’œuvre à un autre endroit. Cet exposé présentera brièvement les processus mis en œuvre dans ce cadre, y compris les évaluations de risques, les évaluations de l’état de l’œuvre et les premières phases de la planification de son traitement.

This presentation discusses the treatment of a large cartoon study on paper (after Raphael) measuring 376 X 541cm. The cartoon had been divided into eight vertical strips for transfer, which had been re-joined and mounted onto canvas in the nineteenth century, and attached to a large wooden stretcher. Owing to its position in storage, this work had become largely inaccessible for study or research. Building works at the National Gallery of Ireland starting in 2013, provided an opportunity to move the work to a new location. This paper will briefly outline the processes involved, including risk assessment, condition assessment, and the first phases of planning and treatment.
