Before entering into the subject of the history of this book and its offspring, the author, the ‘Hida, must be presented briefly. Moritz Steinschneider says of him: “’Haim Joseph David Azulai of Jerusalem (1724-1806) wrote a book about the biographies of the sages of Israel and their works.
