Résumé En

Elizabeth W. Β. Fentress, The Economy of an Inland City: Sétif, p. 117-128. The information derived from the Algerian excavations at Sétif suggests that the economy of some, at least, of the inland cities of the empire was substantially different from that of the ports. A low level of imported goods was apparently matched by a low level of exports. Rather than production, the principle source of wealth was apparently the wages of imperial troops and other officials. This situation is in marked contrast with that of the Fatimid period, when Sétif formed part of an inland trading network, and her position as a market centre is clear both from her imports and from the evidence for her exports.
