Résumé En

" Spatial " adpositions and the problem of polysemyThis paper points to some inadequacies of cognitive analyses of spatial adpositions. Polysemy, it is argued, is often allowed to proliferate without necessity. This excessive liberality can be faulted, among other reasons, on the way semantic features and the central meaning of adpositions are selected and specified. Further, semantic features are often identified with narrowly defined perceptual features, which, because they are taken to represent objective properties, may introduce parasitic information from the depicted scene itself. Finally, in determining the semantic import of the context, we should refrain from construing it too literally, and allowance should be made for pragmatic inferences. Along the discussion, special reference is made to studies of the English preposition over.
