This article returns to the question of public organisation in Rhodes by addressing it through social history. It proposes that we should conceptualize the Rhodian state as a polycentric state by highlighting the ancient cities (Ialysos, Camiros, Lindos) as political centres in tension with the central state. These ancient cities do not constitute ‘tribes’ of the Rhodian city but entities with their own organisation and a margin of autonomy in terms of their local life which they negotiated with the central state, both at the time of synœcism and throughout their history, particularly at the time of the integration of the Peraea. Rhodian citizens navigated between several levels of political participation and several bodies of to which they belonged.

Cet article entend reprendre la question de l’organisation publique rhodienne en l’abordant par l’histoire sociale. Il propose de concevoir l’État rhodien comme un État polycentrique en mettant en avant les anciennes cités (Ialysos, Camiros, Lindos) comme centres politiques en tension avec l’État central. Ces anciennes cités ne constituent pas des “tribus” de la cité rhodienne mais des entités disposant de leur propre organisation et d’une marge d’autonomie pour leur vie locale qu’elles ont négociée avec l’État central, au moment du synœcisme comme au cours de leur histoire, notamment au moment de l’intégration de la Pérée. Les citoyens rhodiens ont évolué entre plusieurs échelles de participation politique et plusieurs corps d’appartenance.
