My dissertation is about an unpublished subject, joining the pioneering researches on the role of women in Lebanon from the period of the French Mandate. This topic deals with the first Lebanese woman diplomat in Lebanon, Angela Jurdak Khoury (195-2011). She embodies the image of a pioneer of the feminization of the Lebanese political and sociocultural life. It is a search of the sociological and historical factors that explain the emancipation of Angela Jurdak Khoury on intellectual and cultural levels. The identification of the factors is the first step to consider, through the social mobility and the institutional approaches. Angela Jurdak Khoury is an American Protestant product: being the daughter of a prominent Arab Protestant Professor at the American University of Beirut are two social factors explaining social determinism among the Arab Protestant Community in Lebanon. Angela Jurdak Khoury has studied sociology, was fully integrated in the campus and was engaged in social causes defended by the Civic Welfare League. The second step was to analyze her integration and emancipation, through the network theory, in order to find out her vision of education, life and feminism. The third step is to focus on her contribution to the Lebanese Foreign Policy in Washington D.C. and her life in the United States since 1945. The subject contributes to question the status of women in the Lebanese society and the rise of a social feminism during the colonial and postcolonial periods. From a subaltern subject during the mandate to a diplomat, Angela Jurdak Khoury is an emblematic figure of the transformations in Lebanon.

Notre thèse sur Angela Jurdak Khoury porte sur la place et le rôle des femmes au Liban à partir de la période du mandat français. Angela Jurdak Khoury (1915-2011) est la première femme diplomate libanaise. Elle incarne l’image d’une pionnière de la féminisation du cercle politique et diplomatique libanais. La première étape de notre travail de recherche consiste à identifier et à expliquer les facteurs de mobilité sociale et de l’émancipation d’Angela Jurdak Khoury sur le plan culturel et intellectuel, en particulier le rôle de l’université américaine de Beyrouth. Produit de la culture américaine et protestante, fille d’un professeur éminent de l’AUB et convaincue des valeurs de l’éducation, Angela Jurdak Khoury entreprend des études en sociologie, s’intègre facilement sur le campus de l’université et s’engage dans les causes sociales défendues par la Civic Service League. La deuxième étape de notre recherche est d’analyser le processus d’intégration et d’émancipation à travers la théorie des réseaux, dans le but de déterminer la vision qu’a Angela Jurdak Khoury de l’éducation, de la vie et des femmes de son temps. Enfin la troisième étape est de nous concentrer sur sa vie après 1945, sa contribution à la diplomatie libanaise et les caractéristiques de son américanisation. À travers l’histoire d’un individu, nous souhaitons questionner la condition des femmes et l’émergence d’un féminisme social au sein de la société libanaise durant la période étudiée.
