La formation d’une bibliothèque d’art au musée du Louvre (an II-1870)

Le 10 août 1793, le Museum des arts est inauguré dans l’ancien palais royal du Louvre. Appelé à refonder l’unité nationale à partir des collections saisies dans le bouleversement de la Révolution, ce lieu emblématique inaugure un nouveau principe ; celui de la notion de patrimoine et de conservation des œuvres. Lieu de mémoire et de méditation, le Louvre se veut également un lieu d’études pour les artistes et les visiteurs : « jamais galerie n’aura eu bibliothèque plus complète et plus magnifique que la nôtre ». Pourtant, du Consulat au second Empire, la bibliothèque du musée croît lentement, sans vraie classification et reste dépendante de la bibliothèque impériale puis royale, tout autant que de celle du Louvre ; vrai dilemme dans un lieu appelé à symboliser la connaissance aux yeux de l’Europe.

On the 10th of August 1793, the Museum of the Arts was inaugurated in the former royal residence of the Louvre. This symbolic space, called upon to renew the nation’s unity on the basis of the collections seized in the upheaval of the Revolution, inaugurated a new principle: that of patrimony and the preservation of works. A space for memory and meditation, the Louvre was also supposed to be a study space for artists and visitors: “no gallery has ever had such a complete and magnificent library as ours.” And yet, from the Consulate through to the Empire, the museum’s library was to grow slowly, without real classification and cataloguing, and stayed dependent on the imperial and then royal library, as much as that of the Louvre; this constituted a dilemma in a place supposed to symbolise knowledge in the eyes of Europe.
