Résumé 0

Afghanistan marks for the French army the return of high intensity combat. Between 2001 and 2014, 70 000 servicemen serve a tour of duty there. For the Engineer branch, this operation signs the return in the foreground of its know-how connected to counter-guerrilla warfare. From 2003, Taliban use improvised explosive devices to threaten heavily the troops deployed in the field. From then on, the Engineer branch does not stop adapting itself to be able to meet this challenge and preserve the freedom of operation of the French soldiers. It acquire a complete chain of equipment and tactics to fight against these home-made bombs, responsible of more than half losses of the western coalition. Drawing from its rich history and from “best practices” developed by the allies, Combat Engineers take completely their place in the counter-insurrection operations of the XXIth century.
