Quel rapport entre les romans tardifs de Giono, à la violence joyeusement cynique, et notre aspiration contemporaine à bâtir une nouvelle Terre et de nouveaux rapports avec les autres vivants ? Pour saisir l’actualité de Giono, il faut revenir à la figure du sorcier, qui hante les écrits des années 1930. L’autrice nous invite à y déceler les dons de voyant de Giono lui-même, ayant comme le chaman de David Abram « l’aptitude à se glisser aisément hors des frontières perceptuelles qui délimitent sa culture particulière […] afin d’entrer en contact avec d’autres puissances alentour. » Ce jeune Giono a cru à l’imminence d’une révolution paysanne ; il a mené une campagne pacifiste ardente et finalement désespérée. Ajoutée au trauma de 14-18, l’empoignade de la Libération en 44, avec sa mise au ban de la vie littéraire, l’écœurent. C’est alors que naissent la virtuosité narrative et une veine comique irrésistible, camouflage d’un chaman qui ne parle plus qu’à bas bruit, pariant sur les générations à venir.

The author invites us to discover in it the clairvoyance gifts of Giono himself, having, like David Abram’s shaman, "the ability to slip easily beyond the perceptual borders that delimit his particular culture […] in order to make contact with other surrounding powers.” Giono then believed in the imminence of a peasant revolution; he led an ardent and ultimately desperate pacifist campaign. Added to the trauma of 14-18, the witch-hunt following the Liberation, with his banishment from literary life, disgusted him. It is then that his narrative virtuosity and irresistible comic vein were born, the camouflage of a shaman who only speaks now in low tones, betting on the generations to come.
